Andy Roddick makes bold prediction about how far Coco Gauff will go at Wimbledon after ‘brutal’ draw is made

Coco Gauff is in pursuit of a third Grand Slam title at Wimbledon this year, having clinched the second of her career at Roland Garros.

Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the French Open on Court Philippe Chatrier to lift a major trophy for the first time since her 2023 US Open triumph.

Following the 21-year-old’s successful clay season, however, she has had a disappointing grass-court swing so far, playing just one tournament at the Berlin Open, where she crashed out in the first round.

Throughout her career, Gauff has struggled on grass, tallying a win percentage of 66%, which compares to her totals of 70% on hard-court and 75% on clay.

Ahead of her first-round matchup with Dayana Yastremska at Wimbledon, former US Open champion Andy Roddick has made a bold prediction for his American compatriot in South West London.

Andy Roddick’s bold prediction for Coco Gauff at Wimbledon

When making his Wimbledon predictions on the Served Podcast, Roddick said: “I don’t think Coco makes it to the fourth round.

“It’s weird because we judge people against their own shadows. How much stock do you put in what she did, which was amazing, over the clay court season.

“Everything about clay benefits her game, it slows it down, more time on the forehand side. Grass is going to be her most challenging surface. It just is.

“The playbook hasn’t changed because she won Roland Garros. She was able to manage the playbook against her with speed on that forehand side.

“Her legs are more of a weapon on the clay; she slides great. The spin profile on her forehand is better on clay.

“She hasn’t won here hardly at all. Her best result was when she was like 15? She has not played well on grass at all. The forehand does it no favours.”

Coco Gauff’s poor record at Wimbledon throughout her career

Wimbledon is the major Gauff has had the least success at, having failed to make it out of the fourth round since her debut at the tournament.

Her first campaign was in 2019, when she defeated Venus Williams en route to round four, but was ultimately knocked out by eventual champion Simona Halep.

In Gauff’s next appearance at Wimbledon, she advanced to the fourth round once again, this time bowing out to Angelique Kerber.

The US star’s next two attempts ended in the third and first rounds, where both times she lost to fellow Americans in the form of Amanda Anisimova and Sofia Kenin.

Last season, Gauff matched her best campaign for the third time, but Emma Navarro prevented her from reaching a maiden quarter-final at the All England Club.
