A giant dome is back on the cards for Limerick - and it could transform sport locally

THE TECHNOLOGICAL University of the Shannon (TUS) has reignited plans for a massive new dome arena on the city’s northside.

The college is seeking planning permission to develop and open a new, 22-metre high multi-sports facility at its campus in Coonagh.

Included in the development will be a 200-metre indoor cycling track.

The college initially sought planning permission for the development early last year, before withdrawing the application.

However, the proposal is back.

A 7,201 square metre mixed-use indoor facility is planned, built around the cycle track.

The arena will be able to be configured for gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, tennis, football and other compatible sports, as well as educational and community activities.

The arena will provide seating for approximately 476 spectators.

It’s anticipated that if the arena goes ahead, it will be able to host examinations, graduations, conferences, exhibitions and cultural events.

Some 32 car parking spaces are planned, some of which will allow for electrical charging.

A total of 48 covered bike spaces, plus new pedestrian links are also in the blueprint for the development.

It’s foreseen the arena will take the form of a contemporary indoor dome rising to 22.2 metres.

This, TUS has said, is designed to maximise energy efficiency and operational flexibility.

TUS added that the development forms part of its longer-term vision for enhanced sports and community infrastructure at its Coonagh campus.

If council planners give the all-clear, the project will then proceed to detailed design and procurement.
