The Lord’s Cricket Ground has been put under a high security alert with some extra measures deployed, including random checks on spectators and undercover guards, during the third Test between India and England under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

According to a report in The Guardian, these are precautions to avoid disruptions to the game and excessive heckling of the players, potential protests, and pitch invasions, like during the 2023 Ashes. A ‘Just Stop Oil’ protester had run onto the field and thrown orange paint during the second Test of the series.

No flags and banners are allowed inside the premises, and additional measures to protect the players in the pavilion — which were introduced after some members’ verbal abuse of the Australian team, especially Alex Carey for his run-out of Jonny Bairstow in that 2023 series — are in place too.

Some Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) — which owns the Lord’s and oversees the sport’s laws — members were banned after the Carey episode, and the buffer zone between players and members increased. The latter will also stay put for this Test, which is expected to draw the biggest crowd at Lord’s in two years.

The crowd capacity at the epochal ground is a little over 30,000, and the first day was sold out. Almost half of the tickets for Day 5 have also been sold already, with traveling fans from India spending thousands of pounds to get a few tickets for the contest.

After two high-scoring matches rife with batting domination and high strike rates, normalcy was restored at Lord’s as England parked their BazBall approach for more attritional batting. Joe Root top-scored with 99 not-out as the hosts put up 251/4, with no batter scoring with a strike-rate of over 60.

“It was an interesting day, starting right from the toss," JioHotstar expert Jonathan Trott said on Match Centre Live after the conclusion of Day 1. “England took a different approach compared to the first two Tests. I thought Ollie Pope came out in typical ‘Bazball’ style — attacking early — but quickly realised that this wasn’t that kind of pitch. Credit to him for adjusting his game. We also saw Joe Root look fluent — a beautiful cover drive and a clip through mid-wicket off Siraj stood out. Once he got going, it felt like he’d bat deep. I thought England might go after Jadeja in the final over of the day, but sense prevailed, especially with Ben Stokes carrying a bit of a niggle," he added.
