'Chances are still there': Abishek Porel believes in IPL 2025 playoff miracle

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup hero Joginder Sharma believes the time has come for Chennai Super Kings ( CSK ) legend MS Dhoni to “rest.” The five-time IPL champions, known for their consistency with 12 playoff appearances, endured a disappointing campaign in the 2025 season, failing to make it past the group stage. After regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury, Dhoni stepped in to lead a struggling side.Speculation around Dhoni’s future in the IPL has intensified since CSK’s early exit. Retirement rumours gained traction last month when Dhoni’s family attended the match against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk. The 43-year-old's move down the batting order further stoked the chatter, especially after head coach Stephen Fleming admitted Dhoni couldn't "bat for 10 overs running full stick."Joginder, who bowled the iconic final over under Dhoni’s captaincy in the 2007 T20 World Cup final, feels the veteran wicketkeeper-batter should call time on his illustrious 18-year IPL career."Considering Mahi's fitness level, he should bat higher up to prove his form, but I believe it's time for him to rest," Joginder said.Earlier this month, Dhoni addressed questions about his retirement after playing a match-winning role against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders. He acknowledged that any decision would depend on how his body holds up in the next few months."After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6–8 months to see if my body can take this pressure. Nothing to decide now, but the love and affection I have seen is excellent," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.
