The Indian Premier League 2026 season has delivered high-octane cricket and a gripping playoff race, but it has also been marked by a series of disciplinary issues, with multiple players and officials penalised for breaching the Code of Conduct. With 46 of the 70 league games completed and Punjab Kings leading the standings with 13 points from nine matches, the focus has not just been on performances but also on on-field and off-field behaviour. So far, eight players and staff members have faced sanctions ranging from fines to demerit points for various offences.

A growing list of violations The disciplinary list began early in the tournament (Match 6) when Abhishek Sharma of Sunrisers Hyderabad was fined 25 per cent of his match fee for using an audible obscenity during a clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Off-field conduct also came under scrutiny when Rajasthan Royals team manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder (Romi Bhinder) was fined Rs 1 lakh after being caught using a mobile phone in the dugout during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, violating strict IPL protocols (Match 16). Tempers flared again in Match 18 when Nitish Rana, representing Delhi Capitals, was penalised for an argument with the fourth umpire over a glove change request for Tristan Stubbs, resulting in a fine and a demerit point. Similarly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Tim David was fined for briefly refusing to hand the ball back to umpires during a match against Mumbai Indians (Match 20), an act deemed as disobeying officials’ instructions.On-field aggression and emotional outbursts On-field celebrations and reactions also crossed the line in several instances. Rajasthan Royals pacer Nandre Burger was fined after his animated celebration of Rishabh Pant’s dismissal was considered provocative (Match 32). Young Kolkata Knight Riders batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi faced penalties for venting his frustration — slamming his bat and throwing his helmet — after a controversial dismissal for obstructing the field (Match 38). Perhaps the most talked-about incident involved Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag, who was fined for using a vape in the dressing room, an act that violates Indian law and brought the game into disrepute during Match 40 against Punjab Kings. Delhi Capitals’ Kyle Jamieson also received a warning and a demerit point for an aggressive send-off directed at youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Match 43 against Rajasthan Royals.Captains under scanner for slow over-rates Beyond individual incidents, over-rate violations have added another layer of concern. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined twice, while Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings), Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) and Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders) have also been penalised.
