Ryan Giggs reflects on Rafael da Silva’s enthusiasm

Brazilian twins Fabio da Silva and Rafael da Silva joined United in January 2008 from Fluminense.

They enjoyed decent careers at Old Trafford, especially under Sir Alex Ferguson, before eventually signing for Cardiff City and Lyon, respectively.

Giggs has reflected on playing with the Da Silva twins, particularly in training, as he came to the end of his playing career.

Speaking to Shoot For Love on YouTube, Giggs confessed to hating the battles he had with Rafael or Fabio in training.

When asked who he least wanted to face in training, Giggs said: “When I was coming towards the end I didn’t want to play against Rafa, Rafael da Silva, or his brother Fabio.

“They would just run forward and I’ll be like you know I was 37/38.

“I don’t want to be running back after them all day. And Brazilians have got this love for not only football for life and they just bring that personality and enthusiasm

“You would finish training… The Brazilians would go and watch, go and play head tennis.”

Rafael was the more prominent of the Da Silva twins at Old Trafford, even though Fabio enjoyed a brighter start at the club.

The right-back made 170 appearances for the club and scored five goals.

In terms of honours, Rafael won three Premier League titles, one League Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

One of his many highlights came when he scored a stunning goal against Liverpool at Anfield in 2012.
