Ndidi urges Nigerians to stay hopeful on 2026 World Cup play

Wilfred Ndidi has urged Nigerians to remain confident that the Super Eagles still have a chance of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off, despite recent developments surrounding the qualification process.

While recent social media updates from FIFA listed the DR Congo national football team as Africa’s representative for the upcoming playoffs in Mexico, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified that no official verdict has been reached regarding its protest over player eligibility.

The NFF filed a formal petition in December 2025, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible dual-nationality players during their playoff victory over Nigeria. Although FIFA recently promoted ticket sales for the playoff tournament featuring DR Congo.

Despite the situation, Ndidi insists the Super Eagles have not given up and will continue their preparations while the matter unfolds.

The Super Eagles captain said the players remain focused on what they can control on the pitch while trusting the NFF to handle the issue.

“To be honest, I don’t really focus on things I cannot control. We concentrate on our football and prepare ourselves the best way possible,” Ndidi told Pulse Sports.

“Of course, everyone wants clarity, but we trust the Nigeria Football Federation and the authorities to handle everything properly.

“As players, our job is to stay ready, stay united and keep working hard. Nigerian fans always expect the best from us, and we respect that.
