The always controversial José Mourinho once again found himself in the spotlight after the intense 2-2 draw between Benfica and FC Porto. The Portuguese manager erupted in the post-match press conference, revealing that he was repeatedly insulted by the opposing bench and directly accusing Porto coach Lucho González of calling him a “traitor” multiple times.

Tensions during the match reached their peak in the second half when Mourinho was sent off following an incident on the touchline. According to the referee, the Benfica coach kicked a ball toward the Porto bench, a claim Mourinho strongly denied. The Portuguese manager explained that he was simply trying to send the ball into the stands as a gesture to fans at the stadium, something he says he has done many times before after one of his team’s goals.

Beyond the red card, Mourinho focused his criticism on what happened in the players’ tunnel. “The Porto bench called me a traitor 50 times,” Mourinho said, clearly frustrated. The Portuguese coach also recalled his successful past with Porto, the club where he launched one of the most historic periods of his career before moving on to European giants such as Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

“I was at Porto and I gave my soul to the club. I have always given everything to the teams I coach,” Mourinho said. He insisted that he does not understand the reason behind the insult and publicly asked Lucho González for an explanation. “A traitor to what?” he questioned.

Mourinho also admitted feeling disappointed by the Argentine coach, whom he considers a fellow professional who has played for different clubs during his career, including his spell at Olympique de Marseille. According to Mourinho, the word used was a direct attack on his professionalism, something he believes is unacceptable between colleagues in football.
