In the age-old question of whether size truly matters, various sources will give you different answers. However, if you happen to be a Winter Olympic skier, then yes, size DOES matter. It matters so much in fact, that Olympians competing at this month’s Milan Cortina Games will have their crotches microchipped in an effort to crackdown on cheating, The Sun reports. The sport of skiing has been swept by a sensational scandal ahead of the games with claims some athletes have injected hyaluronic acid into their penis’ and have been stuffing clay into their underwear. The method behind the madness relates to gaining a competitive advantage during the jump whereby they have to wear a larger suit. This larger suit increases their lift and reduces their descent rate due to a bigger wingspan, effectively turning them into human gliders. One study in Frontiers found even an extra 2cm in suit size circumference could reduce drag by four per cent and lift by five per cent, equivalent to an extra 5.6 metres in jump length. With margins so tight in elite sport, that can make all the difference when it comes to bidding for a medal.Team Norway were found at the heart of this scandal at last year’s world championships when their top two skiers were found to have manipulated the crotch area of their uniforms. It resulted in an 18-month ban for head coach Magnus Brevik, assistant coachThomas Lobben, and staff member Adrian Livelten, while skiers Marius Lindvik – the defending Olympic large hill ski jump gold medallist – and Johann Andre Forfang – a two-time Olympic medallist – were also hit with three-month suspensions. The sports regulating body, the International Ski Federation (FIS), is well aware of the situation and has been left stunned at the “brazen attempt” to “cheat the system”.FIS have introduced new measures to try and prevent a similar scandal during the Olympics. These include new 3D scanning measurements to ensure the uniforms are accurate. As an added measure, the suits will then go through a control checkpoint, at which point tamper-proof microchips will be installed to prevent any attempt at manipulation.Anyone found guilty of suit manipulation will be subjected to a football-style yellow and red card system,Athletes who are disqualified for equipment manipulation will receive a yellow, with a subsequent violation resulting in a red card and disqualification from the next event and the team losing a skier slot in the competition. The first competition of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games began on Wednesday night with the opening ceremony to take place on Friday.
