Janice Tjen vs Kimberly Birrell

The 23-year-old Tjen has been fantastic this season and is finally making her breakthrough into the main tour level WTA events. Over the last two years, Tjen, who played NCAA tennis, has compiled a stunning record on the ITF Tour level. In 2024, her record was 39-3, in 2025 it’s 55-8, backed up by a now 9-3 record at the WTA level. This talented Indonesian player was a finalist at the WTA Tournament in Sao Paulo, and now can claim her maiden WTA title in Chennai.

Tjen needed three sets in her first two matches, including a second round win over Linda Fruhvirtova. Wild card Mia Pohankova and Lanlana Tararudee were the opponents that she defeated in the quarterfinal and the semifinal. Last month she also claimed a 125 level title in Jinan.

Birrell is looking to recover her ranking after falling out of the top 100 this season. She needed three sets against Joanna Garland in the semifinal, and also had a win over Donna Vekic this week. Birrell has far more tour level experience and is 16-19 on the season, she has been a bit of a late bloomer on tour, and was a finalist in Osaka last year. Her run this week in Chennai was a burst of form that was unexpected.

Tjen’s talent and form is evident, this feels like her moment to claim a maiden WTA title. Prediction: Tjen in 2
