Europe will host its first ever table tennis Grand Smash from 14–24 August 2025 as the World Table Tennis Circuit heads to Malmö, Sweden, for the WTT Europe Smash – Sweden 2025.

While athletes from the People's Republic of China have dominated Grand Smashes since the tournaments were first introduced in 2022, the Europe Smash provides a perfect location for one of the group of European players challeging China to claim a victory.

Wang Chuqin of China and Chinese-born Macau, China athlete Zhu Yuling won the last major, at the U.S. Smash last month. However, Wang is not entered in Malmö, with world number one Lin Shidong leading the Chinese charge for the men.

After missing the U.S. Smash due to external circumstances, men's World Cup winner Hugo Calderano of Brazil is one of the favourites to produce an upset against Lin. Calderano is unbeaten in his last three WTT events: the WTT Star Contender Ljubljana, WTT Contender Buenos Aires, and WTT Star Contender Foz do Iguaçu, and will be the second seed in Sweden.

The home Swedish hopes are led by Olympic silver medallist Truls Möregårdh, who is the top European player in the draw just ahead of France's Olympic bronze medallist Félix Lebrun. The top eight men's players due to take part also include Japan's Harimoto Tomokazu, Wang's teammate Liang Jingkun, Lin Yun-ju of Chinese Taipei, and Slovenia's Darko Jorgić (8).

On the women's side of the singles draw, there are no major absentees: each of the top 21 women in the world rankings are currently expected to be present, with the top eight women all coming from China and Japan.

Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, and Kuai Man make up the Chinese contingent from seeds 1 to 5, while Japan's Harimoto Miwa, Ito Mima, and Odo Satsuki complete the top eight seeds.
