As per the IPL 2026 schedule announced on Wednesday, reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will host Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opener of the upcoming Indian Premier League season on March 28.

Having announced that the IPL 2026 start date earlier this week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released a partial schedule of the 19th Indian Premier League.

Only the first 20 matches of the 2026 Indian Premier League schedule was announced on account of upcoming assembly elections in the country. The second half of IPL fixtures will be announced on a later date.

The IPL is one of the world’s most lucrative and widely followed franchise T20 cricket tournaments.

Ten teams - Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI), Gujarat Titans (GT), Delhi Capitals (DC), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) - will compete for the IPL 2026 title.

Following the opener on March 28, five-time champions Mumbai Indians will be at home against three-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29th.

The following day will see another five-time winner, Chennai Super Kings, on the road against inaugural winners Rajasthan Royals.

Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson, Player of the Tournament in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2026, will be in focus in the fixture, after a pre-season trade saw Jadeja join RR from CSK with Samson moving the other way.

This year’s IPL will reportedly feature a total of 84 matches - 10 more than last season. All teams will face each other twice in a double round-robin format. The top four teams will move to the playoff stage, which will feature four matches.

Following the group stage, the top two teams will face off in Qualifier 1 with the winner directly progressing to the final.

Meanwhile, the IPL teams finishing third and fourth in the league stage will play in Eliminator 1 with the winner of the match facing the loser of Qualifier 1 in the Qualifier 2 to decide the second team in the final.

So far, in every IPL season involving 10 teams, the sides have been split into two virtual groups.

Each team will play the other sides in its own group twice, along with one designated opponent from the opposite group, while facing the remaining four teams once in the league stage.
