Julian Nagelsmann’s stance on speaking to Man Utd after extending Germany contract

Julian Nagelsmann’s head could be turned by Manchester United, despite signing a new contract to extend his stint as Germany’s head coach in January.

Michael Carrick is currently making a strong case to remain Manchester United’s head coach beyond this season, with the Red Devils on course to qualify for the Champions League.

The former United midfielder, aged 44, was appointed head coach in January following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

United have yet to decide whether to give Carrick a new deal to keep the role permanently, or to hire someone else after being linked with coaches such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique and Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Man Utd-linked Julian Nagelsmann has his eyes on the Premier League

Nagelsmann is renowned as one of the most prominent tactical minds of his generation.

From saving Hoffenheim from relegation to helping them qualify for the Champions League, Nagelsmann went on to reach the semi-finals of Europe’s most prestigious competition with RB Leipzig in 2020.

Nagelsmann also won the Bundesliga title and two DFL-Supercups with Bayern Munich between 2021 and 2023, before taking charge of the Germany national team.

Despite it being a World Cup year, Nagelsmann is interested in the United job, although no talks have taken place between the club and his representatives.

Nagelsmann signed a contract extension that will keep him in his post until the 2028 European Championship tournament.

Reliable reporter Ben Jacobs claims Nagelsmann wants to hold negotiations sooner rather than later, noting that his head could be turned by an opportunity to work in the Premier League.

“Julian Nagelsmann would like to have these conversations if he is to be formally approached by late April or early May as opposed to doing it after the World Cup,” Jacobs told The United Stand.

“And I would imagine that Manchester United share that position as well.

“But with Nagelsmann, I think despite extending, his head could still be turned after the World Cup or even before it by the opportunity to join a Premier League club because that’s been on his bucket list since Chelsea made an approach.”

There is nothing Carrick can do about the noise in the background other than focus on strengthening his case to remain head coach by winning football matches.

Like Nagelsmann, Enrique is among the best managers in world football.

Enrique won everything as Barcelona manager in 2014 and 2017, including the treble, before leading Paris Saint-Germain to Champions League success for the first time in 2025.

An Enrique-inspired PSG made easy work of Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win, and he continues to be linked with the United job as a potential candidate.

Enrique is expected to sign a new deal at PSG, but nothing has been agreed yet.

The last reports surfaced two weeks ago, stating that Enrique’s future is set to reach a conclusion in the coming weeks.

By signing a new deal at PSG, Enrique would be ruling himself out of the running to become United’s head coach.
