18-year-old South Sydney Rabbitohs junior Johannes Logan dies in ‘terrible’ tragedy

The rugby league community is mourning the tragic death of South Sydney Rabbitohs junior Johannes Logan.

It was confirmed on Thursday the 19-year-old had died by suicide, with tributes flowing for the talented footballer.

Originally from Orange in NSW, Johannes started out playing rugby union before turning his attention to rugby league after moving to Sydney, where he was based in Coogee.

Johannes attended St Joseph’s College and played 1st XV football for his school at GPS level in a sign of the bright future he had on the football field.

He was part of South Sydney’s SG Ball program and was on track to play in the club’s Jersey Flegg squad in 2026.

Standing 6’1” and weighing 103kg, Johannes was said to be a powerful presence on the field, and the talented prop was seen as a potential future star of the NRL.

The Rabbitohs released a statement on Wednesday night.

“The South Sydney Rabbitohs are mourning the passing of Jersey Flegg Cup player, Johannes Logan, who passed away this week,” it read.

“Johannes, 19, was a schoolboy rugby union, water polo and swimming star at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill where he played in the first XV rugby team, first water polo team, was captain of the senior swimming team, as well as representing New South Wales in rugby, before joining the Rabbitohs’ pathways program for the 2025 season.

“Johannes represented the South Sydney Rabbitohs in eight SG Ball Cup under 19s men’s games, and one Jersey Flegg Cup under 21s men’s game, last season.

“Johannes, who came from Orange in central west New South Wales, was a much-loved member of the Rabbitohs, willing to support his teammates and the Club on and off the field.

“The young middle forward had developed strong bonds and friendships within the playing group and staff, and he will be dearly missed by everyone connected to the Rabbitohs.

“The South Sydney Rabbitohs, the RLPA, the NRL and St Joseph’s College are supporting the Logan family, Johannes’ friends and teammates, clubmates and staff at this very difficult time, and we all request privacy for his family and friends while they mourn the passing of Johannes.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up, with more than $50,000 already raised for the Logan family. “Support the Logan family during this difficult time, if you would like to help out, a donation would be most welcomed,” the GoFundMe description reads.

“These funds will go directly to the family to help them during this difficult time.

“Our prayers are with Rene, Andrew, AJ, and Abi. You will be missed Johannes.”
