Emma Raducanu has been heavily under the spotlight since winning the US Open, particularly due to her coaching changes.

Raducanu has made history at the Miami Open this week, as she continues to navigate her career since becoming a Grand Slam champion at just 18-years-old.

This is her best run of wins so far this year, especially since Raducanu parted ways with Nick Cavaday in a decision made by him.

Emma Raducanu explains reason why she ended trial with Vladimir Platenik

Since making her breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2021, Raducanu has had six coaches on a permanent basis.

Emma Raducanu’s Coach Dates Nigel Sears April to July 2021 Andrew Richardson July to September 2021 Torben Beltz November 2021 to April 2022 Dmitry Tursunov July to October 2022 Sebastian Sachs December 2022 to June 2023 Nick Cavaday January 2024 to January 2025

As she looked to hire a seventh, Raducanu began a trial with Vladimir Platenik, who has previously coached the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Dominika Cibulkova, at Indian Wells.

However, this trial was ended after two weeks, with Raducanu now explaining her reasoning for ending the partnership in her Miami Open press conference.

“I think the work that we did before the tournament. I mean it wasn’t long, it was only maybe two weeks or 10 days, but we did some really good work and I think getting some benefits on the match courts right now from what we did,” said Raducanu.

“He is a great coach, he is so experienced and has worked with so many players and brought them up to the top and developed players. I respect him a lot as a coach. I think, for me, it just I guess wasn’t right at the time and I’m not sure going forward.

“I think this week was a great eye opener to when I am happy and expressive and myself and I think having people that I have known for a very long time since before the US Open and just those familiar faces, I think is the most valuable thing for this week at least. I guess it’s difficult because I had just met him and it’s difficult to build many years of connection straight away.”

Emma Raducanu says what Mark Petchey brings to her team

As Raducanu re-finds form in Miami, she is going back to her roots in an attempt to return to Grand Slam winning form.

The 22-year-old is now into the Miami Open quarter-finals, with Raducanu being joined by her fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura, alongside childhood mentor Jane O’Donoghue.

Raducanu also has Mark Petchey in her camp, who has previously worked with her before and coached Andy Murray in 2006.

When explaining what Petchey brings to her team, Raducanu suggested that she wanted to have a bit more fun on the WTA Tour.

“I think just a relaxed environment but focused when needs to be,” said Raducanu. “There is probably more switching on and off rather than being on the whole time.

“I am someone who worked really hard and can be really intense, but sometimes too intense and I guess in that way it is harder to be extremely focused when you need to be on the match court because you are focused from the first minute to the last.

“So I think being able to switch off and have fun with them. We just create certain routines and they bring small doses of happiness that I guess just keep you going.”

Raducanu will play Jessica Pegula on Wednesday March 26, as she looks to reach the Miami Open semi-finals for the first time.
