Man Utd profits soar as latest financial results revealed after Sir Jim Ratcliffe cost

Manchester United has announced that it generated an operating profit of £32.6 million in the first 6 months of the financial year, compared to a £3.9 million operating loss in the year before, in its second-quarter update. The club credits 'operating cost and headcount reduction programs implemented in the prior year' for the results.

The quarter itself saw an operating profit of £19.6m, compared to £3.1m in the second quarter of fiscal 2025. The £19.6m in profit was also up from £13m in the financial year's first quarter. The men's team being positioned fourth in the Premier League and women’s first team being placed second in the Women’s Super League was also highlighted.

Chief executive Omar Berrada said that “the difficult decisions made in the past year” by Sir Jim Ratcliffe enabled that turnaround and that messaging has continued.

The United co-owner led a series of cuts, including vast redundancies, after purchasing a stake in the club in February 2024.

Berrada said: “We are now seeing the positive financial impact of our off-pitch transformation materialise both in our costs and profitability. We continue to take a football-first approach and invest in both our men’s and women’s first teams.

"On the pitch our men’s team sits 4th in the Premier League and our women’s team are 2nd in the Women’s Super League, as well as reaching the League Cup Final and the quarter final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Today’s results demonstrate the underlying strength of our business as we continue to push for the best football results possible for our Men’s and Women’s teams."

Club sources believe United have effectively managed their structural cost base, which has increased profitability. The club is said to be in a strong position if they qualify for the Champions League.

United's matchday revenue for the quarter was down, however. They raked in £49.5m, £2.5m less than 12 months before. This is primarily put down to playing three fewer home cup matches in the quarter, and "partially offset by improved performance of our matchday revenue function over the seven league home matches played."

Commercial revenue for the quarter was also down at £78.5m, a decrease of £6.6m. But the club's operating expenses decreased by £22.5m. Investment in the first-team squad has seen amortisation for the quarter rise by £5.2m to £54.6m.

Eyes will be on whether United can fulfil their aim of returning to Europe, with the Champions League internally identified as a target following Ruben Amorim's dismissal at the start of January. United could bank close to £100m next term if they qualify for the Champions League due to the competition's prize money and broadcast revenue.
