R Ashwin has been denied a world record with respect to ‘Man of the Series’ awards because of an administration gaffe in a series in West Indies last year. On Tuesday, as India defeated Bangladesh at Kanpur to clinch a 2-0 series win, Ashwin was adjudged the Man of the Series for the 11th time in his career that put him on level with Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan.

However, the award that Ashwin received on Tuesday would have helped him overtake Muralitharan’s record if he was handed one during the West Indies tour last year. In the two-match Test series that India won 1-0, Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets and also scored 56 in the long innings he batted. And he was in contention to claim the Man of the Series award.
