Suryakumar walked out to bat in the powerplay after MI openers Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma departed early. Suryakumar put up a 71-run partnership for the third wicket with Will Jacks, who scored his maiden half-century for the five-time champions with a knock of 53 in 35 balls.

Suryakumar made 35 runs in 24 balls in a knock that included five boundaries before he was dismissed by Sai Kishore. His dismissal triggered a batting collapse as the hosts managed a total of just 155.
