Matildas star Mary Fowler ACL injury confirmed, Asian Cup availability in doubt

Mary Fowler is facing a race against time to be fit for the Matildas’ home Asian Cup campaign after confirmation she has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury in Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United at the weekend and will now face up to a year - or perhaps more - on the sidelines.

The Women’s Asian Cup is due to kick off on March 1 next year, meaning that Fowler will need to make a quicker-than-usual recovery to be involved in the tournament.

In a statement released on Wednesday night by Football Australia, Fowler vowed to use the lay-off as an opportunity for growth.
