Mikel John Obi thinks Ruben Amorim is 'fantastic' but says 'horrendous' Man Utd have one major issue

Manchester United are struggling right now with four consecutive defeats to end 2024.

When Ruben Amorim joined Manchester United, he was brutally honest about the situation he was walking into.

Amorim warned fans of a storm, admitting it will take time before his full idea is seen implemented successfully.

The 39-year-old head coach explained that he would have preferred to take charge in the summer, but Amorim wanted United and was told it was now or never.

Amorim always knew it would be tough to adapt this United side to his 3-4-3 style mid-season.

Now, it is clear he was right and both United and Sporting Lisbon may be wishing everything had been settled in the off-season instead.

John Obi Mikel is a big fan of Ruben Amorim

Amorim however has already shown enough for fans to have faith in his ability and full of hope for the future.

Now, Chelsea and Premier League legend, Mikel John Obi, has been discussing Amorim and the situation at United, giving his support to the Portuguese coach.

“Even if you’re not a United fan, it’s awful to watch them. They’re horrendous. Newcastle would’ve been 3-0 up in 20 minutes. It was a disaster.

“Listen, it’s not the manager’s fault at all. Rúben Amorim is a fantastic and brilliant young manager.”

Mikel then went on to point out that in his view, it is the squad which is the problem.

“I’ve said it when he came into the club – the players in United, I’m sorry, they are nowhere near good enough to be playing for Manchester United.”

Ruben Amorim will be a huge success at Manchester United

Mikel’s verdict is which is also held by a vast majority of the fanbase, with the squad seen universally as a big problem.

The team is mediocre at best in the majority of positions, with Amorim’s style being one which requires players of a certain ilk – which explains all the potential departures.

Amorim will be given time, with the next handful of transfer windows likely to be key in his squad building and crafting a team capable of playing the intense style of football that is demanded by United’s boss.

United made the correct appointment and if he is backed – simply given actual attacking wing-backs – then he will turn the club’s fortunes around.
