Devon Conway has joined the growing list of batters to have been retired out in IPL. So far, there have been five batters including Ravichandran Ashwin, Atharva Taide, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma and Conway to have been retired out in the T20 league’s history – two of them in the ongoing season.

Mumbai Indians raised eyebrows when they retired out Tilak Varma during the fag end of their ultimately unsuccessful chase of 222 against Lucknow Super Giants last week.

Now, Chennai Super Kings have followed the suit of their rivals by retiring out opener Conway despite the left-hander hitting a brisk half-century – 69 off 49. He was replaced by another left-hander in Ravindra Jadeja towards the end of the 18th over with CSK still needing 49 to win off 13 deliveries.

The five-time champions eventually finished at 201/5 with Jadeja unbeaten on 9 off 5.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad later explained the rationale behind the decision.

“He (Conway) is more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order. When you have Jaddu (Jadeja), known for that (finishing) role particularly, you expect that. When you know the batter is struggling…initially he (Conway) was still timing it well. We waited and waited until (he started struggling)," he explained during the post-match presentation.

CSK succumbed to their fourth defeat of the season in five games and are 9th on the points table. Gaikwad attributed the latest setback to the dropped catches.

“I think the last four games, the only point of difference, it has been critical, the catches we have been dropping, the same batsman is scoring 15,20, 30 runs," he said.

CSK had done well to get rid of PBKS’ big-hitters including captain Shreyas Iyer, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis among others limited to single-digit scores. However, Priyansh Arya produced a memorable show, hitting a blistering hundred before the Shashank Singh (52* off 36) and Marco Jansen (34* off 19) applied the finishing touches to help PBKS rack up 219/6 in 20 overs.

“Priyansh played well," Gaikwad said. “High risk batting and it came off well. We were getting wickets at regular intervals, but they (PBKS) kept the momentum going. 10-15 runs lesser would have helped us. But it comes down to dropped catches. It was spot on in the batting perspective.

CSK were given a solid start by their Kiwi opening pair of Conway and Rachin Ravindra (36 off 23) as they added 61 runs.

“Two of our best batters who play pace well went at the top of the order. They had a good powerplay. Lot of positives in the batting department. We were two three hits away today," Gaikwad said.
