Ashwin won the elusive award against Bangladesh

Ashwin has played 102 Tests for India

Ravichandran Ashwin created history during the recently concluded India-Bangladesh series by winning the Player of the Series (POTS) award. Ashwin was the star with both bat and ball for the Rohit Sharma-led side as they won their 18th consecutive home series.

Ashwin hit a century in the first Test at Chennai and finished with 114 runs in two innings. He took 11 wickets in the series, including a six-wicket haul in the fourth inning of the series opener. Ashwin equaled Muttiah Muralitharan 's massive world record for the most POTS awards in Test cricket history.

The Blunder That Cost Ashwin The World Record

While Ashwin is more than likely to become the outright holder of the world record sooner rather than later, it has emerged that the 38-year-old should already have had the elusive tag. A blunder by Cricket West Indies (CWI) last year is the reason that Ashwin does not have his world record 12th POTS award yet.

In a bizarre sequence of events, no player was given the POTS award during India's two-match Test series against the West Indies last year. Ashwin was the top contender to seal the prize as the highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets. No other player had more than 7 scalps in the series. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was another contender for the award after making 266 runs in three innings at an average of 88.66 in his debut series.

According to a report by Indian Express; CWI have put the blame on an Indian agency, who sponsored the series for the gaffe. On the other hand, the Indian agency pointed out that they were responsible for just commercial activities and the POTS award was the West Indies cricket governing body's responsibility.

While the award is handed out at a later date to the team and player if it is forgotten during the presentation ceremony but that has not happened in this case yet.
