FAI set to bid for 2029 Women's Champions League final

The FAI has submitted a preliminary bid to host the 2029 UEFA Women's Champions League final at Aviva Stadium.

Katie McCabe helped Arsenal to glory in last year's showpiece, when they beat Barcelona 1-0 at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.

This season's final will be played at Oslo's Ullevaal Stadion.

The Aviva hosted the men's Europa League final in 2011 and 2024.

The Lansdowne Road venue will have seven matches at Euro 2028, including a last-16 clash and a quarter-final, with the Republic of Ireland men's team set to play all their group games there if they qualify directly.

Now, the FAI is looking to bring one of the biggest occasions in the women's game to Dublin.

"Following a three-month exploratory process, the FAI worked closely with Aviva Stadium, the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Dublin City Council, to review the requirements to host the event with consideration given to legacy potential, delivery feasibility and financial costs," the association said in a statement.

"The FAI believes that the collaborative approach with key stakeholders, experience of successfully hosting the UEFA Europa League final in 2011 and 2024, as well as the preparatory work being done for Euro 2028 will support the bid.

"Also, the increased popularity of women and girls’ football puts the association in a strong position to host the 28th staging of the final of the top women’s club competition in Europe.

"The association will continue to work closely with its partners ahead of the final bid submission in early June."
