'This is a shock'

FT: Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

BBC Radio 5 Live at Leigh Sports Village

This is a shock. United were unbeaten in the WSL and on a run of four wins in a row after back-to-back wins in the Champions League in between domestic duties. It's a deserved win for the visitors and a huge confidence boost for Villa's players.

Marc Skinner agreed with me that flat was the best way to describe United's performance, but they can use that as motivation for facing PSG here on Wednesday.

For Natalia Arroyo's side, they stuck to the game plan and she also revealed that Miri Taylor told her that she would score today.

It was a fantastic strike to win it, Taylor timing her strike of a bouncing ball from a corner to perfection. They rode out the late pressure and deservedly leave Leigh with all three points.

'Can't moan at the result'

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner: "It was very flat. I felt we needed to be cleaner - we needed to be cleaner in our actions and our techniques. But I don't want to overemphasise the situation. You are going to have flat performances.

"What we need to do is make sure we turn that into a better performance going into the PSG game. Look, sometimes these [results] happen. I thought Villa's goal was a scrappy, scruffy, goal from a set piece.

"It happens and sometimes it goes against you, but today I didn't think we deserved anything from the game. I can't moan at the end result."

'Thompson is doing really well'

Chelsea

More from Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor, speaking to Sky Sports about Alyssa Thompson's performance: "I think Alyssa is doing really well. She's bringing an impact in the team. Even if she's young, she has a lot of talent. She's connecting more and more to her teammates, understanding the way we want to play as a team. She's improving, so I'm really pleased with her performance.

On equalling their 33-game unbeaten record: "Again, I think people need to realise coming here in the Emirates Stadium with the atmosphere and trying to not concede a goal was something great, even if we conceded at the end, just the fact we were able to bring the tie from the game today means a lot."

'Frustrated to concede the late goal'

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor, speaking to Sky Sports: "A bit frustrated about the goal we conceded at the end of the game. To be fair, in the second half, we probably didn't control the game as we wanted to.

"Analysing the game, we created a lot of opportunities in the first half, we probably could've killed the game, and we score one goal, it was not enough to kill the opposition's hope. They stayed alive and I think in the second half it was more difficult. We didn't control the ball as I said, but really proud of the team's performance. I think the players showed a lot of resilience on the pitch. They all defended and tried to protect the goal, and I think in the defensive aspects, we were quite good.

"I think when you play a team like Arsenal they have a lot of technicality, so when you are able to recover the ball it's more like the fact when you recover you have to be able to hod the ball a little bit more, being brave under pressure, making sure we hold the ball for the team to get tired on the pitch."

On Stina Blackstenius' goal ruled out for handball: "Difficult for me to say anything on that. I was too focused on some other parts of the game. The referee was in a better position to make the call, so I need to watch the game again to make some comments."

On Frida Maanum's goal ruled out for offside: "I'm not aligned, so I can't see whether the offside was offside or not, so I don't want to comment on that."

'Hopefully this allows us to have bigger ambition and belief '

FT: Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Natalia Arroyo speaking to Sky Sports about what this win can do for the group moving forwards: "We know that for these types of games probably no one expects us to win, so if we can take something, the point at the Emirates and these three here at United, that allows us to believe and dream bigger.

"I cannot analyse the big win without connecting it to the two draws against Everton and Leicester, they are the games that we need to be able to win. The points are good and important if we can add this three.

"Hopefully this allows us to have bigger ambition and belief as a club, and we can continue against London City before the break and really grow in the table and think higher."

'Hopefully we can kick on and start getting more wins'

FT: Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa

Aston Villa forward Kirsty Hanson speaking to Sky Sports about her side's win: "It was tiring I have to say but I'm so, so proud of the team. Last week we were very disappointed conceding so last minute, we worked hard last week and so happy it came out today."

On the side being the top scorers from set pieces this season: "We know sometimes that's what you have got to get in games against top teams like United. We've been working hard on them and just been doing everything else as well."

On her role: "Sometimes you've just got to work hard. I might not get the goal but especially against United they keep putting pressure on us. So my job was to just get the team forward, win throw ins, corners, free kicks. I was just trying to do my best today."

On kickstarting the campaign with this win: Hopefully. You can see we have been quite unbeaten, some frustrating draws, but hopefully we can kick on and start getting more wins."

'Credit to us, they looked a worse team than they are'

FT: Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Natalia Arroyo speaking to Sky Sports about their win: "It's a massive win. I am still excited. It's not that I can't believe it, I know the team can do that, but we were looking for this type of performance, especially after Everton and how we defended there.

"I am happy that we were able to get a clean sheet again. We suffered a bit at the end because they were chasing the game but we were super solid. They were hardly able to get any passes between us and they looked a worse team than they are, which is credit to us. They could not find the combinations.

"We had chances to almost kill the game earlier so we were not dying of tension but again super proud, it's a big three points and we are working and building what we want to be."

On being joint-top for goals from set pieces: "In set pieces attacking and defensively we are trying to dedicate the typical time really. We are talking about throw ins too because I believe they are a set piece and we did better with them today.

"We are not doing more than other days we are not scoring but training it every day we are finding different solutions so it is difficult for the opposition to analyse us."

'I'm in favour of VAR'

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

Arsenal

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers, speaking to Sky Sports on the Stina Blackstenius handball decision: "We were very surprised because I don't see any players called for it. We watched it back, it's hard, I've just watched it back from one angle and it doesn't look like a handball, so that's frustrating, of course."

On Frida Maanum's disallowed goal: "That angle is really hard to see. For me, in retrospect, being able to see it on video, being able to pause, it's hard for me to see. It's really hard for the referee on the pitch in live action to see as well. It's a game where you see momentum shifts, and Chelsea are on top of us at the start of the game, and we come back and show such mentality in the game and so much quality. It's fine margins and then certain decisions, because really big decisions which are out of our hands. If you asked me the question now if I am in favour of VAR, I would say yes.

"It makes. a big impact because it's so hard this game for both teams. There's so much effort going into creating things and finishing things, so of course it does something. What I'm happy with is how the team stayed very composed. It drove their energy and urgency and wanting more and being convinced we can score one."

'Clearly not handball'

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

Rachel Corsie

Former Scotland captain on Sky Sports

On the handball call to rule out Stina Blackstenius' goal:

It's clearly not. I think the referee perhaps thought because her arms go back to balance Stina Blackstenius' movement. You see as it hits her chest her arms drop back behind her and the referee thinks that's why it's brushed an arm.

She's got to get that right. It's not a difficult decision. You see the referee waits and calls for a foul. If you look at the Chelsea players there's not a single arm up.

'Arsenal have been robbed'

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

Izzy Christiansen

Former England midfielder on Sky Sports

Arsenal put themselves in a position in that second half that showed signs of a team that were so hungry to get back into the game. What they did was exceptional from start to finish in that second half.

They scored two goals that have been disallowed. That game should have finished 3-1 to Arsenal.

They were two absolutely abysmal decisions. I think it’s cost them and they have been robbed. There’s no other way to put it, they have been robbed.
