NPFL: Rivers United face tough Insurance test as Rangers host Remo Stars

Matchday 29 of the Nigeria Premier Football League arrives with the title race tightening and the relegation battle becoming even more intense. Leaders Rivers United will attempt to defend their top spot against a resurgent Bendel Insurance in Port Harcourt, while second-placed Rangers International face a stern test against defending champions Remo Stars in Enugu, writes TUNDE LIADI.

Rivers United will seek to consolidate their leadership when they host Bendel Insurance at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in one of the standout fixtures of Matchday 29.

The Pride of Rivers climbed to the summit following a commanding 3–0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors in midweek—remarkably the first time they have scored three goals in a single game this season. With 49 points and two games in hand over their closest rivals, the Port Harcourt side have a strong opportunity to extend their advantage.

However, the test against Insurance will be anything but straightforward. When both sides met earlier in the season in Benin City, they settled for a goalless draw during a period when the Edo club was still searching for form. Since then, the team has improved considerably under coach Kennedy Boboye, becoming one of the toughest sides to break down.

Currently sixth with 41 points, the Benin Arsenal have quietly positioned themselves as top-four contenders and will relish the challenge of unsettling the league leaders.

Another headline clash will unfold at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium where Rangers International host reigning champions Remo Stars.

Rangers are enjoying a strong campaign and sit second on the table with 47 points. The Flying Antelopes briefly occupied the top spot last weekend before Rivers United reclaimed it midweek. Their recent 2–0 win over Nasarawa United further underlined their title ambitions.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu will be hoping his side can complete a season double after edging the reverse fixture 1–0 in Abeokuta on Matchday 9.

For Remo Stars, the match marks a crucial test for new coach Usman Abd’Allah, who will oversee his first away fixture in charge. A positive result in Enugu could reignite their campaign, but defeat may further dent their survival hopes.

Derby emotions will take centre stage in Kano as Kano Pillars welcome city rivals Barau FC in a fiercely contested clash.

The first meeting between the sides ended in a dramatic 2–1 win for Barau FC, and Pillars will be eager to settle scores this time around. The Sai Masu Gida faithful are desperate for victory as their team sits 17th with 32 points and hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Barau FC, meanwhile, arrive with confidence after defeating Plateau United 2–1 last weekend. The Maliya Boys occupy 10th place with 37 points and another derby triumph would further boost their impressive debut campaign.

At the Pantami Stadium in Gombe, Wikki Tourists face El Kanemi Warriors in a crucial northern battle. Wikki, currently 16th with 32 points, are battling internal challenges and need a win to move clear of the relegation line. El Kanemi, still recovering from their heavy loss in Port Harcourt, must overcome fatigue from a demanding travel schedule.

In Katsina, Katsina United host struggling Kwara United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. The hosts, ninth with 38 points, aim to push into the top seven, while Kwara United remain stuck in the drop zone and urgently need points to revive their survival hopes.

At the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, Abia Warriors welcome Shooting Stars. Despite inconsistent results, Abia Warriors sit fifth with 43 points and will hope to exploit Shooting Stars’ poor away form.

Elsewhere, nine-time champions Enyimba journey to Ozoro to face Warri Wolves. The People’s Elephant are struggling in 15th place with 33 points and cannot afford another slip against a Wolves side that already claimed victory in Aba earlier this season.

In Owerri, newcomers Kun Khalifat FC take on Bayelsa United. Buoyed by a morale-boosting draw against Enyimba in Aba, Kun Khalifat will aim to secure maximum points against a Bayelsa side just two points above the relegation line.

Meanwhile in Jos, Plateau United look to bounce back from consecutive away defeats when they host Niger Tornadoes. The Peace Boys will be particularly motivated after suffering a humiliating 4–0 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
