ENG vs PAK Match Prediction & Analysis

England face Pakistan in the fifth Super 8 match of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Pallekele. England started their first Super 8 outing with an emphatic win against Sri Lanka and now have a real shot at making the semis if they win this one. Pakistan, on the other hand, enjoyed a solid campaign in Group A, picking up three victories and just one defeat to qualify for this stage, though their opening Super 8 fixture ended without a result due to rain.

On paper, there is not much to separate the two teams heading into this clash. That said, Pakistan could hold a narrow advantage, especially because their spin attack may get more help from the surface here.

HEAD TO HEAD

TEAMS PREVIEW

England Preview

England came out swinging in the Super 8 opener, crushing Sri Lanka by 51 runs after defending 147 in a match where runs were hard to come by. The batting lineup had its issues last time out, but the bowling unit stepped up brilliantly to seal the deal.

They're back at the same ground to face Pakistan, and that familiarity should work in their favor.

Philip Salt and Jos Buttler go hard right from the opening delivery, giving England aggressive momentum at the start. Salt delivered exactly that in their last outing, leading the way with 62 from 40 balls. Expect at least one of them to get past 30 against Pakistan.

Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook handle the middle overs well, maintaining pressure and never allowing the opposition to gain control. Bethell has been their most productive batter so far with 146 runs across five games at a strike rate of 133.

Further down the order, Sam Curran and Will Jacks bring the firepower in the death overs, pushing hard as the innings draws to a close.

The bowlers were outstanding in the last match, dismissing Sri Lanka for a mere 95. Jofra Archer looked back to his best with an impressive return of 2-20 from three overs.

Curran causes problems too, mixing up his pace with slower deliveries and cutters that deceive batters in the middle and final phases. Spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson have the responsibility of dismantling Pakistan's batting. Rashid seems to be finding his rhythm now and should thrive on this pitch. Will Jacks could also get the ball early in the innings after tearing through Sri Lanka with a brilliant 3-22.

England Predicted Playing XI:

Philip Salt, Jos Buttler(w), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook(c), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid

Pakistan Preview

Pakistan have gathered strong form at this T20 World Cup, taking three wins from four matches to seal second place in Group A and move into the Super 8. Rain washed out their first Super 8 clash with New Zealand, but they will back themselves to take down England.

The top three of Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, and Salman Agha are all in good touch with the bat at the moment. Sahibzada has been their standout performer so far with 220 runs in four matches at a strike rate of 164. He goes hard from ball one and looks set to accumulate 30 runs or more at a strike rate exceeding 130 in the powerplay phase against England.

Fakhar Zaman and Usman Khan bring composure during the middle period, keeping things steady and pushing the total forward as the innings develops. Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz take charge in the death overs, launching into the attack with powerful hitting and crisp execution. How they handle Adil Rashid will probably determine the outcome of this contest.

Pakistan's spin bowlers have done most of the heavy lifting at this World Cup, accounting for 26 of the 33 dismissals the side has recorded. Saim Ayub operates in the powerplay and has a talent for breaking through with major scalps. When the middle phase begins, Abrar Ahmed, Nawaz, and Shadab take over as the primary options since their varied offerings have caused problems for batsmen on this slow surface.

Usman Tariq, with his unusual action, offers something different, and since England have never faced the spinner previously, he could be their most effective tool to dismantle the middle batting lineup.

Pakistan Predicted Playing XI:

Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha(c), Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan(w), Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Salman Mirza, Usman Tariq

PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS

Weather Conditions

Conditions should be largely warm and humid with substantial cloud cover and a reasonable chance of scattered showers lingering into the evening. Winds are light, and while rain isn’t guaranteed, the sky is expected to stay mostly cloudy with moisture in the air that could affect play.

ENG vs PAK Pitch Report

Four matches in this T20 World Cup have taken place at Pallekele, and teams batting first have generally finished in the 150 to 170 range. The pitch offers good value for shots at the start, but scoring becomes tougher as the innings moves on, especially once spin is introduced in the middle phase. In the previous fixture at this venue, England were limited to 146 for 9 after batting first, before rolling Sri Lanka for 95 in the chase.

If England bat first again, they will aim to get close to the 175 to 185 mark. As for Pakistan, anything in the 160 to 170 bracket in the first innings should give them a decent base to defend.

Toss: To Bowl

With overcast skies around, the skipper who gets the call right at the toss should opt to bowl first and make full use of the assistance available. Early wickets could tilt the match early on from the outset.

If there is plenty of cloud about, winning the toss becomes important, and the captain making the right call should choose to bowl first. That decision could bring early wickets and set up the rest of the game.
