Paris Saint-Germain vs. Bayern Munich

Initial reactions and Observations

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve got a lot to say about this match and will not mince words. If it sounds negative and you disagree, so be it.

It’s getting incredibly hard to defend Vincent Kompany right now. Week in week out expectations are, well, expected from the Belgian but he never seems to deliver against top teams. Conceding a goal against nine men? Unforgiveable.

Musiala’s injury was a turning point. After that, the players seemed uninterested and even lax in playing, allowing PSG to grab two goals out of nowhere and win the game. I’m not blaming Musiala for anything, but the team fell apart after that.

Anthony Taylor has got to be one of the most incompetent referees in the sport. It was on full display for everyone to see.

90+11’ — FT.

90+6’ — PSG make it two. Ousmane Dembele seals the deal. It’s over.

90+2’ — Lucas Hernandez is given marching orders. PSG down to nine players.

82’ — PSG is now down to 10 men following Willian Pacho’s red card challenge on Leon Goretzka.

78’ — Goal. PSG score a goal which stems from Kane getting dispossessed.

77’ — Match is winding down now

61’ — Olise shoots but it goes straight at Donnarumma. PSG race down the other end and Doue fires across the face of goal.

53’ — Coman breaks but gets closed down and his shot saved by Donnarumma.

49’ — Kvaratskhelia finds himself 1v1 with Neuer but the goalkeeper produces a brilliant save.

45’ — Serge Gnabry replaces the injured Musiala. Second half kicks off.

Halftime Observations

Bayern doesn’t have enough pace to counter PSG.

Taylor giving out dodgy calls is nothing new. How is this man still allowed to officiate matches?

Musiala’s injury is highly concerning

45+3’ — Musiala goes down after a challenge with Donnarumma. Musiala seems to have broken something in his foot; we’ll keep you posted on updates. HT.

45’ — Three minutes added on.

41’ — Aleksandar Pavlovic crosses for Jamal Musiala but the ball went straight at goal. Donnarumma saves it.

38’ — Kingsley Coman spins Joao Neves on the edge of the box and crosses it to Harry Kane who misses the target.

33’ — Josip Stanisic can’t continue anymore; Sacha Boey takes his place.

32’ — Manuel Neuer keeps it out from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

27’ — Olise shoots on goal but Gianluigi Donnarumma pushes it away.

22’ — PSG pounding on Bayern’s door but the latter holds on.

6’ — Both teams have taken their first shots of the match, Desire Doue for PSG and Michael Olise for Bayern. Nothing has come from both moves.

Kickoff! — Here we goooooo!

Lineups are out! The lineup is exactly the same as the predicted lineup, which is probably the best team that Bayern can put out with the available personnel.

Bayern Munich has made it to the last eight teams of the FIFA Club World Cup, and the team standing in the way of a semifinal berth is French and European champions Paris Saint-Germain. Luis Enrique has put together a well-drilled side that can beat anyone on their day. Like Bayern, PSG has only lost once in the CWC so far, with that anomaly being a 1-0 loss to Botafogo. That game aside, however, the Parisians have not conceded a goal in any of their other matches, scoring 10 goals including 4-0 wins over Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Bayern on the other hand has scored 16, 10 of which came in the first game against Auckland City but let in four which is not bad in itself but given the format of the knockouts (one-off), any goal conceded may prove costly.

This is one of the most anticipated matchups in this CWC knockout round, with the other one being Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund. The winner of both these matches will meet in the semifinals. Can Bayern make the next step?

It’s Bayern time.
